Education is more than just learning some facts and skills. True learning involves thinking skills such as the ability to ask questions and find solutions. For this reason, each primary and elementary student has been paired with a deaf high school student for our Science Collab. The older deaf student is the peer mentor for the younger student with apraxia. They help their younger partners with their sign language and with the fine motor tasks in the lab that the younger children cannot do themselves due to the challenges of their apraxia. In the spring, they put on a Science Fair to share their science discoveries with their families and the other students in the school. The Science Collab occurs in the high school lab. The curriculum is designed to teach the students to ask questions and “think”. It also offers a broader opportunity for language development.
